A modular gene sequencer designed for BGI
BGI stands at the forefront of genomics, where its high-performance gene sequencers are the engine of discovery. However, the supporting infrastructure for these sequencers—a tangle of computers, servers, switches, and monitors—created significant lab management challenges. Cables were messy, space was tight, and the static nature of the setup could not adapt to the varying equipment volumes across BGI's different laboratory units. This rigid environment led to operational inefficiencies and wasted resources.
BGI required a foundational shift in how sequencer peripherals were managed. Their objectives for the new BGI Gene Sequencer design were clear:
Scalable Architecture: Create a system that could flexibly scale its performance and capacity in lockstep with changing lab requirements.
Space-Optimized Design: Develop a form factor that could fit seamlessly into most lab environments, no matter how constrained.
User-Centered Maintenance: Drastically simplify equipment access, inspection, and cable management to improve technician workflow.
LKK Design approached this challenge with a focus on holistic BGI Gene Sequencer design. We immersed ourselves in the lab environment, interviewing technicians and maintenance staff to understand their daily pain points. Our solution was not just an enclosure, but a reimagined, modular ecosystem.
Design Research
Our research identified key frustrations: the inability to see device status without opening cabinets, the difficulty of accessing equipment for repairs, and the poor ergonomics of fixed monitor positions. We also cataloged the spatial constraints of diverse lab layouts.
Industrial Design
The industrial design phase produced several key innovations central to the BGI Gene Sequencer design identity:
Core Modularity: We established a 3U form factor as the base unit, with a repeatable 2U core module. This allows the platform to scale from 3U to 5U, 7U, 9U, and more, offering unparalleled flexibility.
Transparent Access: A full-length top cover made from smoked transparent acrylic serves a dual purpose: providing at-a-glance status monitoring and swinging open completely for full, unobstructed access to all internal components.
Adaptable Ergonomics: An ingeniously simple and cost-effective monitor bracket was designed for the top of the unit. It ensures a comfortable viewing angle at any stack height and is removable to maintain a clean aesthetic when not in use.
Mechanical Structure Design
The mechanical design ensured the conceptual BGI Gene Sequencer design was robust and reliable:
We engineered a rigid internal frame and secure stacking mechanism to guarantee stability in tall configurations.
Integrated cable routing channels and tool-less access features were implemented to simplify setup and maintenance.
Material selection focused on achieving a balance between structural strength, weight, and aesthetics.
Prototyping and Testing
We built functional prototypes to validate every aspect of the design.
Tests confirmed the stability of stacked modules, the durability of the hinge mechanism, and the effectiveness of the cooling system.

Tooling Development and Mass Production
Precision molds were developed for high-visibility components like the acrylic top cover and the module housings. A rigorous quality control protocol was established to ensure that every unit delivered to BGI labs worldwide met the highest standards of reliability and finish.
