A Beidou satellite phone designed for maritime patrol missions
With the continuous advancement of society, reliable communication technology has become indispensable. This need is even more critical in specialized outdoor environments, such as maritime patrols, where traditional networks are unavailable. Our client approached LKK Design to develop a dedicated Beidou Satellite Phone—a rugged communication device engineered to thrive in these demanding conditions.
This product is designed as a robust, three-proof (water, dust, shock) terminal, integrating Beidou satellite positioning, voice calls, and SMS messaging to ensure connectivity and safety for users in the field.
The project's success hinged on meeting several key objectives:
Rugged Reliability: The industrial and mechanical design had to achieve an IP67 waterproof rating, ensuring protection against harsh outdoor elements.
User-Centric Design: The device needed to be ergonomic and intuitive for users in stressful environments like maritime operations.
Functional Integrity: The embedded hardware and software had to flawlessly execute core functionalities: precise Beidou positioning, clear voice communication, and reliable texting.
Manufacturability: The design had to be optimized for efficient production without compromising on the stringent durability requirements.
Our team at LKK Design executed a comprehensive, full-cycle development process for the Beidou Satellite Phone design.
1. Design Research
We began by deeply analyzing the end-users' workflows, challenges, and operational habits in outdoor scenarios. This research informed every design decision, ensuring the final product would be not just functional, but genuinely useful in the field.
2. Industrial Design
Focusing on ergonomics and a robust aesthetic, we created a form that communicates durability and reliability. The layout of buttons, ports (with sealed covers), and material selection were all meticulously planned to meet the IP67 standard while providing excellent user experience and a professional look.
3. Mechanical Structure Design
This phase was critical for achieving the IP67 rating. Our mechanical engineers designed a robust internal and external structure, optimizing shell fittings, gasket grooves, and button seals. We selected durable materials and ensured the internal layout securely housed the mainboard, battery, and antenna, guaranteeing stability against impacts and vibration.
4. Prototyping & Testing
We built functional prototypes to validate our design. These units underwent rigorous testing, including submersion for waterproofing, drop tests, and environmental stress tests. The feedback from this phase was crucial for iterating and refining the design to meet all reliability targets.
5. Mold Development & DFM
Following design finalization, we conducted a Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis. We supported our client in supplier development and provided detailed input for mold design and manufacturing, ensuring the product could be mass-produced with high quality and consistency.
6. Mass Production
We provided support through the pilot run and mass production phases, troubleshooting early-stage manufacturing issues to ensure a smooth transition from prototype to a reliable, market-ready product.
