The hospitality industry is rapidly evolving, with self-service technology becoming an irreversible trend. For prestigious star-rated hotels, this technology must not only be functional but also aesthetically align with a high-end environment. While Hisense possessed strong technological expertise as an industry benchmark, they sought a partner to achieve a breakthrough in design, ergonomics, and manufacturing processes.
LKK Design was commissioned to develop a new hotel self-service terminal. Our challenge was to merge advanced functionality with a sophisticated design language, supporting Hisense's leadership in business informatization and intelligent transformation.
Hisense's primary goal was to create a self-service terminal that would stand out in the competitive market. The key objectives were:
Aesthetic Innovation: To break away from the stereotypical, impersonal look of standard kiosks and create a product that complements the luxurious ambiance of high-end hotel lobbies.
Superior User Experience: To apply ergonomic principles for an intuitive user journey, simplifying self-check-in, room selection, payment, and receipt printing.
Manufacturing & Service Efficiency: To design for manufacturability, aiming to reduce assembly costs and simplify maintenance through intelligent structural design.
LKK Design employed a holistic, user-centric design process to meet these goals.
Design Research
Our process began with extensive environmental and user research. We analyzed hotel lobby layouts and user behavior to understand the context of use. A detailed ergonomic study identified user pain points and operational sequences, forming a scientific foundation for the entire design.
Industrial Design
Aesthetic Breakthrough: We created a全新的产品形象 (brand new product image) that defies convention. The design features a unique, integrated form, accented with classic wood grain and elegant coloring. This approach positioned the terminal as a "Prince Charming" among kiosks—a sophisticated and welcome addition to any hotel environment.
Ergonomic Detail: Every functional element, from the card reader to the keyboard angle, was meticulously positioned and validated through ergonomic studies to ensure a seamless and comfortable user experience.
Mechanical Structural Design
One-Piece & Modular Architecture: We championed a one-piece design for the housing to enhance aesthetic unity and manufacturing efficiency. The internal architecture is fully modular, ensuring easy disassembly and assembly. This significantly reduces maintenance time, difficulty, and associated costs.
Prototyping and Testing
Multiple functional prototypes were built and subjected to rigorous testing. We validated the form factor, material feel, and every user interaction point. Feedback from real-world testing sessions was incorporated to refine the design, ensuring the final product was both visually perfect and operationally flawless.
The hotel self-service terminal designed by LKK Design delivered significant strategic value to Hisense.
Market Leadership: The product established a strong competitive advantage for Hisense in the commercial sector, showcasing their commitment to innovation and design.
Market Validation: At the 18th Retail Asia Expo, the terminal attracted numerous visitors, generating high market interest and acclaim.
A Forward-Looking Product: By focusing on both the big picture and the smallest details, LKK Design delivered a truly forward-looking product that places Hisense at the forefront of the commercial industry.
