OMRON Air Purifier
Creating a Medical-Grade Home Product for the Chinese Market
Innovation Insights

Project Background
OMRON has nearly 40 years of research and development experience in nebulizer technology, and its nebulizer products have gained recognition from mothers around the world.
Nebulizers are auxiliary medical devices used for inhalation therapy by people with asthma. A large proportion of asthma patients are children whose respiratory systems have not yet fully developed.
User Requirements
With many years of experience working with children with asthma and their parents, OMRON has developed a deeper understanding of the discomfort experienced by children and the concerns of their families.
For this reason, OMRON announced a business transformation at the beginning of the year, strengthening its development in the field of respiratory diseases. Air purifiers were introduced as one of the company’s new product lines during the year.
Design Strategy

Aesthetic Design
The simple, rounded, and integrated form creates a friendly appearance suitable for home environments.
The curved lower edges of the front and rear housings taper inward toward the bottom, giving the product a lighter and more agile appearance.
The grille and fan-blade design on the top adds visual layering while increasing the air outlet area.
The upper sections of the front and rear housings curve inward, creating more surface detail while helping save internal space.

User Experience
The handle, which is the main point of contact between the user and the product, was designed for convenient and comfortable gripping.
The side water tank and handle are integrated into the same design element, creating a more unified appearance without visually protruding from the product body.
The touch-control panel combines graphic icons with text labels to provide clear and comprehensive operating information.
Basic operating buttons are enlarged and visually emphasized to highlight the product’s main functions.
The button information is screen-printed, with backlighting visible through the rear surface.
The interior areas on the front and rear sides of the grille also feature illuminated effects. The light color changes according to the detected air quality.
Air quality is divided into three levels: excellent, good, and poor. The corresponding indicator colors are blue, green, and red.
💡 Solution
1. Medical-Grade Air Purification for Chinese Homes
The project aimed to create a medical-grade household product suitable for the Chinese market, providing effective respiratory protection against air pollution and smog.
With support from LKK Design, OMRON introduced four air purifier models equipped with advanced HEPA filters and Filter Shield technology.
These systems can effectively remove PM2.5, influenza viruses, four common airborne bacteria—including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus albus, and Serratia marcescens—as well as formaldehyde and other harmful gases.
The purification system also helps prevent secondary pollution.
2. Intelligent Air Quality Management
Test reports showed that the sterilization rate could exceed 99%.
The four air purifier models also include air quality display functions and filter replacement reminders.
These intelligent features help create a healthier breathing environment for babies and their families.
After being introduced to the market, the products brought new competition to China’s air purifier industry, addressed an underserved market segment, and provided effective support for people who are more sensitive to air quality.
