Creating Exclusive Cultural Products for the Leshan Giant Buddha

The Leshan Giant Buddha has stood within the red sandstone cliffs for more than a thousand years.
The project drew inspiration from the original form of the Giant Buddha and used the plants growing on its surface as a key creative direction.
While the products could take different forms, their cultural meaning always remained closely connected to the Giant Buddha.
Based on this concept, the plants were given the symbolic identity of “Maitreya Auspicious Herbs,” creating a distinctive cultural theme for the product collection.

During the development of exclusive cultural products for the Leshan Giant Buddha, the project team discovered that plants and weeds were regularly removed during the annual maintenance and restoration of the statue.
These plants had grown directly on the body of the Giant Buddha and could therefore be interpreted as a continuation of its life.
They were regarded as materials carrying a spiritual connection to Buddhist culture and offered a meaningful medium through which the cultural and emotional value of the Giant Buddha could be communicated.
The project therefore selected these plants as a core material for the cultural products, transforming them into objects that convey a sense of spirituality, peace, protection, and emotional connection.
Design Strategy
The plants growing on the Leshan Giant Buddha were treated as meaningful spiritual materials.
By incorporating them into the cultural products, the design aimed to communicate the symbolic presence and protective meaning associated with the Buddha.
The products were not developed merely as tourism souvenirs. They were designed as spiritual and emotional carriers that allow visitors to establish a deeper connection with the Leshan Giant Buddha and its cultural heritage.

1. Establishing a Spiritual Connection with the Buddha
To create a stronger spiritual relationship between the products and the Giant Buddha, the silhouette of the statue and the radiance of Buddha light were defined as the main graphic elements.
These recognizable symbols could be translated into product graphics, packaging, patterns, and visual applications.
By combining the silhouette of the Buddha with the symbolic halo, the products gained a deeper form of cultural expression and communicated more than the external appearance of the landmark.
They conveyed the spiritual values, historical significance, and protective symbolism associated with the Leshan Giant Buddha.
2. Visible and Inner Forms of Protection
The Buddhist prayer bead bracelet was positioned as a visible symbol of protection.
It can be worn around the wrist, expressing faith and providing an outward sense of safety, blessing, and protection.
The more discreet spiritual amulet was named “Maitreya Auspicious Herb.”
It can be placed inside a bag, serving as an inner symbol of peace, calmness, and emotional security.
The bracelet offers visible external protection, while the Maitreya Auspicious Herb represents quiet internal protection.
Together, the two products form the “Gift of Protection,” symbolizing the Buddha’s blessing and guardianship.
