Meituan, the world's largest on-demand delivery platform, handles over 24 million daily orders with more than 600,000 active delivery riders. While pursuing efficiency, ensuring rider safety during delivery is paramount. To address the critical safety risks posed by riders using their phones while navigating traffic, Meituan partnered with LKK Design and LKKER SCM to create a specialized, multi-functional Bluetooth headset. The goal was to develop a device that seamlessly integrates with the riders' helmets, enabling hands-free order management and fundamentally enhancing road safety.

The project's core objective was to design an intelligent wearable device fully integrated into the delivery workflow. Key requirements included:

1. Safety First: Achieve true hands-free operation, eliminating the need for riders to handle their phones while cycling.

2. Scene Adaptation: The design must be compatible with both summer and winter helmets, ensuring year-round usability.

3. Clear Communication: Ensure crystal-clear call quality and accurate voice command recognition, even in noisy outdoor environments.

4. Durability & Long Battery Life: Withstand rigorous outdoor use with waterproofing and a battery capable of lasting a full workday.

5. Efficiency Boost: Deep integration with the Meituan APP to streamline operations and increase order fulfillment efficiency.

LKK Design employed a cross-disciplinary approach, starting from the user scenario to drive innovation across Industrial Design, Mechanical Structure Design, and Electronic Design.

Design Research

Our in-depth research identified key pain points for riders, including extreme weather, traffic noise, and long-wear comfort. This led to a dual-scenario solution: a semi-in-ear design for summer helmets for breathability, and a base + speaker module for winter helmets, allowing easy connection with gloves and transmitting audio through the helmet interior.

Industrial Design

• Ergonomics & Helmet Integration: The design features a streamlined form that contours to the ear, using eco-friendly silicone caps for long-wear comfort. Crucially, the earpiece's shape and mounting mechanism were meticulously crafted to form a perfect, secure union with the specific contours of the Meituan rider helmet, ensuring it remains in place during vigorous movement without compromising helmet integrity or safety.

• Brand Identity: The color scheme utilizes Meituan's signature yellow and metallic black, creating a bold, recognizable brand statement.

• User Experience: A one-button control system simplifies operation. A front-facing red and blue power indicator allows for easy battery status checks at a glance.

Mechanical Structure Design

• Mechanical Structure:

• Helmet-Specific Mounting: Developed dedicated base structures for winter helmets that allow for a secure magnetic or snap-on connection for the speaker module, designed for easy use even with gloves on.

• Durability: Achieved an IPX7 waterproof rating, protecting the device from sweat, rain, and water splashes.

• Acoustic Design:

• Noise Reduction Structure: A specialized acoustic chamber and wind-resistant mesh were engineered to effectively filter out background noise like wind rush, significantly enhancing speech pickup clarity for both the microphone and speaker.

• Call Quality: Incorporated a high-definition microphone with dual-mic noise cancellation algorithms, working in tandem with the physical acoustic design to enable high-quality calls even during fast cycling.

Electronic Design

• Core Chipset: Utilized the low-power CSR3024 chip supporting Bluetooth 5.0 for stable, reliable connections over 10 meters, featuring automatic reconnection upon power-on.

• Power Management: Built around a 3.7V 100mAh rechargeable lithium battery, optimized for energy efficiency to deliver a battery life of over 10 hours.

• Intelligent Voice: Integrated a user-friendly Chinese voice prompt system for power-on, pairing, and low-battery warnings, providing an intuitive user guide.

Prototyping and Testing

Multiple functional prototypes were built and subjected to rigorous real-world testing. Tests focused on connection stability, call quality in various noise environments, battery endurance, waterproof performance, and compatibility with different helmet types. This iterative process ensured the final product met the high-demand, high-standard daily needs of delivery riders.

The Meituan Bluetooth Headset, crafted by LKK Design, is more than just hardware; it is a vital work tool and safety guardian for riders. Its deep integration with the Meituan APP allows riders to complete nearly 80% of phone operations—like accepting orders, checking in, and making calls—hands-free via voice control. This has led to a 50% increase in order acceptance efficiency while providing comprehensive safety assurance.
