A car air purifier designed for Bosch
Developing nations face escalating pollution challenges, with harmful elements like smog and haze increasingly compromising air quality. Within this context, the in-car environment becomes a critical space for health and well-being. BOSCH, a global leader in technology and services, identified a significant gap in the market: most car air purifiers failed to deliver on their promises, plagued by inaccurate measurement and ineffective purification.
BOSCH approached LKK Design with a ambitious goal: to create their first high-end car air purifier. This was not to be a mere me-too product, but a flagship device that would embody BOSCH's core values of quality, technological precision, and international brand prestige. The project aimed to set a new standard in the category and establish a strong foundation for BOSCH's future product line expansion.
BOSCH's objectives for the project were clear and demanding:
Brand Elevation: The design had to communicate BOSCH's technological sophistication and reliability, enhancing the brand's visibility and value perception.
Superior User Experience: The product needed to provide real-time, accurate feedback on air quality and purifier status through an intuitive interface that aligned with automotive instrument panel design principles.
Technical Integrity: It required the integration of sophisticated air quality sensors and a central processing chip to ensure precise measurement and efficient purification performance against PM2.5, TVOC, exhaust, and bacteria.
Futuristic Design Language: The aesthetics needed to be forward-looking, breaking away from conventional designs to create a visually striking product that enriched the car's interior.
Design Research
Our team began with an in-depth analysis of the target market and user behaviors inside the vehicle cabin. We identified key pain points with existing purifiers: unclear information display, distracting operations, and uninspired aesthetics. Research into the BOSCH brand DNA allowed us to translate abstract values like "precision" and "innovation" into a tangible design strategy focused on clarity, integration, and technological appeal.
Industrial Design
The industrial design was driven by a "future-tech" concept.
Dynamic Form: The front features a dynamic arc combined with integrated LED lighting, creating a rich sense of depth and layering.
Strategic CMF: The top air inlet utilizes a tension-filled gradient mesh, while the bottom outlet employs a front-and-back distribution, contributing to a high-sense-of-future aesthetic.
Integrated User Interface: The front of the device houses a full data display (LCD) and light perception indicators. The simple, friendly graphical user interface (GUI) provides comprehensive operating status and air quality information at a glance, ensuring a perfect human-machine experience aligned with the driver's cockpit.
Mechanical Structure Design
The challenge was to pack complex filtration, a powerful fan, sensitive sensors, and PCBA into a compact unit. Our mechanical engineers developed an extremely efficient internal layout and optimized the airflow path. This compact structure was crucial for maximizing air changes per hour (ACH) and purification efficiency while maintaining low noise levels, all within a sleek and desirable form factor.
Prototyping and Testing
Throughout the development cycle, we built multiple functional prototypes for iterative testing. We rigorously evaluated the purification performance, sensor accuracy, noise/vibration levels, and software stability in simulated real-world car environments. This iterative process of prototyping and testing ensured the final product met BOSCH's stringent quality and performance benchmarks before mass production.
The successful launch of the BOSCH car air purifier in 2015 delivered significant value:
Category Leadership: It established BOSCH's first high-quality benchmark in the car air purifier market, earning immediate user trust and recognition.
Product Line Expansion: The success of this flagship model provided a solid foundation for BOSCH to expand into a broader range of products, enriching their entire portfolio.
Strategic Partnership: This project laid the foundation for a lasting partnership between LKK Design and Fortune 500 companies, showcasing our end-to-end design and engineering capabilities.
Tangible User Benefits: The final product effectively purifies the in-car environment, providing users with a healthy, safe, and technologically advanced driving experience through real-time air quality monitoring and efficient purification.
By collaborating closely with BOSCH, LKK Design demonstrated how strategic design bridges the gap between advanced technology and a flawless user experience, creating products that win in the market.
