Innovation Insights

Project Background

The W5000 is a large unmanned cargo aircraft with a maximum payload capacity of approximately five metric tons.

It was developed to provide more efficient, lower-cost, and more environmentally responsible air transportation services for regional logistics markets.

The aircraft combines unmanned flight technology, a large-capacity cargo compartment, lightweight composite structures, and flexible airport adaptability.

It is positioned as an efficient air freight solution for point-to-point logistics between cities.

Innovation Insight

The W5000 uses an unmanned flight system supported by ground-based monitoring and operational control.

By eliminating the need for onboard pilots, the aircraft helps reduce flight crew costs while creating new possibilities for commercial cargo operations.

Its structural and system design was optimized to reduce overall aircraft weight, lower manufacturing costs, and decrease fuel consumption.

Composite materials also help reduce long-term maintenance requirements compared with conventional metal aircraft structures.

Together, these innovations improve operational efficiency while supporting lower-cost and more sustainable air logistics.

Design Strategy

Product Design

The fuselage was optimized according to the client’s cargo transportation requirements.

Its effective cargo volume exceeds 65 cubic meters and is compatible with standard cargo containers and pallets.

The aircraft supports multiple loading and unloading methods, allowing it to adapt to different cargo types, logistics facilities, and operational scenarios.

It can take off and land at both general aviation airports and civil aviation airports, expanding its possible route network and application range.

The fuselage uses a composite material structure with excellent fatigue and corrosion resistance.

In addition to reducing structural weight, this material solution can lower related maintenance expenses by more than 20% compared with metal aircraft of a similar class.

Airframe Configuration

The W5000 adopts a high-wing configuration, a rectangular fuselage, and a low horizontal tail.

One turboprop engine is installed on each side of the aircraft.

The aircraft is equipped with retractable tricycle landing gear, with the main landing gear positioned beneath the fuselage.

This configuration allows the W5000 to operate at general aviation airports while providing strong adaptability to different airport conditions.

💡 Solution

1. An Efficient Large Unmanned Cargo Aircraft

The W5000 is positioned as a large unmanned cargo aircraft serving both domestic and international regional air freight markets.

According to the project positioning, it is designed to provide a high level of safety and one of the largest payload capacities among comparable domestically developed unmanned cargo aircraft.

By making full use of existing general aviation airports, the aircraft can support direct point-to-point cargo transportation between cities.

This approach can reduce intermediate logistics procedures, shorten transportation times, and improve the efficiency of modern supply chains.

The W5000 provides logistics companies with a flexible transportation tool that increases efficiency, expands delivery coverage, and creates new commercial value.

2. Lower Operating Costs for a Growing Logistics Market

The rapid expansion of the logistics industry has created stronger demand for lower transportation costs and higher delivery efficiency.

The W5000 has a maximum takeoff weight of approximately 10.8 metric tons and a maximum payload of approximately five metric tons.

Its unmanned operation, lightweight structure, reduced fuel consumption, and lower maintenance requirements provide significant advantages in both operating efficiency and overall cost.

The cost per ton-kilometer is expected to be more than 40% lower than that of a comparable crewed cargo aircraft.

By 2035, the number of large unmanned cargo aircraft operating in China is expected to approach one thousand units.

Air White Whale has also established strategic cooperation with logistics companies including ZTO Express and Fengniao, supporting the future commercial development and application of the W5000.
