🤝 Project Background

McGee is a well-known IP in Chinese family entertainment, featured on popular shows like Happy Camp and I Am a Singer. As the smart education market grew, the client sought to extend McGee’s influence from digital content to physical tech products. The goal was to develop a third-generation AI Reading Robot that combines cutting-edge technology with emotional appeal to support children’s learning and growth.

📝 Requirements and Goals

  • IP Physicalization: Transform a 2D cartoon character into a 3D, ergonomic, and appealing AI Reading Robot for children.
  • Safety & Engagement Balance: Incorporate interactive features like lighting while ensuring absolute safety.
  • Brand Consistency & Innovation: Maintain McGee’s family DNA while introducing groundbreaking visual and functional improvements.
  • End-to-End Manufacturing: Achieve seamless mass production of complex components like silicone antennae while controlling costs.

💡 Solution and Design Process

LKK Design applied a systematic approach to AI Reading Robot design, delivering a full-cycle solution from research to mass production.

1. Design Research & Strategy
Through in-depth user studies, we found that “cuteness” and “interaction” are key to engaging children, while “safety” and “education” are top priorities for parents. This led to our core strategy: creating a “Safe, Smart, and Playful AI Reading Robot Companion.”

2. Industrial & CMF Design

  • Form Transformation: Using soft, flowing lines and a rounded silhouette, we created a friendly and safe physical form for the AI Reading Robot.
  • Interactive Antennae: The silicone antennae, which emit a warm glow during interaction, serve as an emotional bridge between the robot and the child.
  • CMF & Branding: The signature “Mango Yellow” color and expressive face design reinforce McGee’s IP identity while ensuring a premium look and feel.

3. Mechanical Structure & Ergonomics

  • Compact Layout: We optimized the internal architecture to house electronic components without compromising the robot’s small, child-friendly form.
  • Safety-First Design: The silicone antennae were engineered for secure attachment, and the robot passed rigorous drop tests to meet child safety standards.
  • Ergonomics: Buttons and interfaces were tailored for small hands, ensuring intuitive and comfortable use.

4. Prototyping & Testing
Functional prototypes were developed using CNC and 3D printing. Key tests included:

  • Glow uniformity and color temperature of the antennae.
  • Durability and assembly precision of silicone parts.
  • Grip stability and ease of use for children.

5. Manufacturing & Tooling

  • Precision Tooling: High-gloss injection molds ensured a flawless shell finish. For the antennae, we implemented silicone overmolding to achieve seamless integration and even light diffusion.
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Mold flow analysis helped prevent defects, improving production efficiency and reducing costs.

6. Mass Production & Quality Control

  • Production Support: We assisted in setting up standardized assembly processes to maintain design integrity.
  • Quality Assurance: A full-process quality control system—from material inspection to final product testing—guaranteed every unit met high safety and performance standards.

💎 Project Value

  • Commercial Success: The McGee Reading Robot became a market hit, praised for its appealing design and advanced AI Reading Robot capabilities.
  • User Satisfaction: Children love it as a playful companion, while parents trust it as an educational tool.
  • Design Impact: This project demonstrates how AI Reading Robot design can successfully merge technology, emotion, and business value through a full-process approach.
