Project Background
Epson’s current projector portfolio mainly consists of professional high-power projectors, primarily used in conference rooms, outdoor cinemas, and other large venues. Their designs are largely function-driven with limited emphasis on aesthetics. For this project, Epson aims to better align with the Chinese home market by developing a projector tailored specifically for home use in China.
User Requirements
Compared with competitors in the market, Epson’s hardware offers higher brightness (lumens) and superior image clarity. However, this also results in significantly higher hardware costs. The key challenge of this design is how to attract home users in an increasingly design-driven and highly competitive market, while working within a limited enclosure (housing) cost budget.
Design Strategy
User Insights
At the beginning of the project, Epson’s home projector design team conducted multiple rounds of user interviews. This allowed the designers to build early empathy with target users. They also carried out a detailed slice analysis of competing products, summarized key user pain points, and only then proceeded with the product design phase.
Experience Optimization
We incorporated metal and fabric elements into the product to enhance its sense of quality. The five selected design directions all feature CMF (Color, Material, Finish) and aesthetic genes favored by users, while each carrying its own distinct personality.
We also focused on the treatment of the ventilation and heat dissipation openings, ensuring that while meeting the cooling requirements of high-power hardware, the design can visually blend into a home environment and overall interior style.
💡 Solution & Process
- The five design concepts feature a minimalist aesthetic with low enclosure cost. Compared to other highly “over-designed” competitors in the market, they present a refreshing and refined visual language, enabling the delivery of higher-performance and more cost-effective products to a broader range of users.
- Upon project completion, Epson expressed high satisfaction with the outcomes. Not only were additional concepts selected, but the project lead from Epson Japan also traveled to LKK in person to engage in discussions with the project team. They highly praised LKK’s execution efficiency and output quality. This collaboration is expected to further evolve, combining Epson’s technological strength with LKK’s design capability to generate even more compelling products in the future.
