As the smart home market rapidly expands, robots are increasingly entering domestic spaces. However, home service robots available at the time faced two critical challenges:

Market Insight: In the robotics market, appearance serves as the first impression that influences consumer purchasing decisions. Through comprehensive market research, sales analysis, and user interviews, LKK identified that competing products suffered from excessive "machine-like" aesthetics—they appeared visually disconnected from home environments, lacked perceived intelligence, and failed to establish human-robot affinity. Their cold technological appearance made genuine integration into family life difficult.

The Opportunity: Herbot's manufacturer recognized this gap and partnered with LKK Design to create a home service robot that balances emotional connection with intelligent functionality. 1. Design Research: Defining the Direction

  • Multi-dimensional Insight: The team began not with sketches, but with deep market analysis, sales channel research, and in-home observation of target users (children and seniors). Quantitative and qualitative research revealed a critical pain point: existing robots felt too "mechanical" and disconnected from warm home environments .

  • Strategy Formation: Based on these insights, the team established "affinity" as the core design principle. Every subsequent decision aimed to make the robot feel like a family member rather than a machine .

2. Industrial Design: Giving Form and Soul

  • Design Language: Designers translated the "affinity" strategy into visual form. Rejecting common straight lines and sharp angles, they embraced soft curves inspired by feminine grace, creating an immediate emotional connection .

  • CMF and Interaction Layout: Carefully selected warm, tactile materials and colors balance the 10-inch display and audio components. The six-microphone array, sensors, and facial recognition camera are discreetly integrated, preserving aesthetic harmony while enabling advanced functionality.

3. Mechanical Design and Engineering: Making Ideas Reliable

  • Structural Innovation: This represented the critical intersection of aesthetics and engineering. To achieve expressive gestures without expensive multi-servo systems, mechanical engineers developed the inclined rotating shaft mechanism .
