Client and Project Background

Client and Project Background

Sizherui Intelligent Medical, innovating in high-end medical equipment, aimed to popularize robotic surgical technology with its Kangduo Robot series. The project involved launching three distinct models—SR1000, SR1500, and SR2000—each tailored to different market segments and clinical needs.

Sizherui partnered with LKK Design to leverage our deep expertise in industrial design. The goal was to create a product line that seamlessly integrated clinical functionality, technical performance, and human-centric design, establishing a new benchmark for domestically developed surgical robots.

Requirements & Objectives

Requirements & Objectives

The core objective was to use design as a key differentiator, enhancing the Kangduo Robot series across performance, user experience, and brand perception. The key design requirements were:

  • Clinical Adaptability: The design had to align with the functional specs and workflows of each model (SR1000/1500/2000) for diverse surgical applications.

  • Optimized Human-Robot Interaction: Improve surgeon comfort, reduce fatigue, and streamline operational efficiency during complex procedures.

  • Brand Value Communication: Establish a cohesive, family-style design language that conveys high-end reliability, precision, and professionalism.

  • Technical Integration: Ensure a seamless fusion of complex mechanical structures and control systems within an aesthetically clean and stable enclosure.

Solution and Design Process

Solution and Design Process

LKK's design team followed a structured, user-centered process, from initial research to prototyping and testing, to deliver a feasible and superior design solution.

1. Design Research
We began with immersive research in operating rooms, analyzing surgeons' workflows and pain points in robot-assisted surgeries. Through user interviews, competitor analysis, and technical assessments, we defined key design pillars: Stability, Precision, Usability, and Cleanability, tailoring strategies for each robot model.

2. Industrial Design

  • Form Language: Guided by the principles of "Precision, Reliability, and Approachability," we employed flowing surfaces and a thoughtful color split to reduce the equipment's visual mass and clinical coldness while maintaining a perception of solidity.

  • Human-Robot Interaction (HRI): The control interface was laid out intuitively according to the surgeon's logic. Key touchpoints and display modules were made clear and accessible. The range of motion for robotic arms was extensively simulated to ensure collision-free movement and easy positioning.

  • Materials & Color: We selected medical-grade, corrosion-resistant materials. A primary palette of white and light grey, accented with a tech blue, communicates a clean, professional, and advanced aesthetic.

3. Mechanical Structure Design
Our team worked closely with Sizherui's engineers to optimize key structural components—like the base, robotic arm joints, and drive systems—without compromising the design integrity.

  • Ensured stability and low noise during high-speed operation.

  • Implemented a modular architecture for easier maintenance and future upgrades.

  • Achieved a compact footprint to adapt to various operating room layouts.

4. Prototyping and Testing
Full-scale, functional prototypes were built for multiple rounds of validation:

  • Ergonomic and usability testing.

  • Structural strength and durability tests.

  • Workflow validation in simulated clinical environments.
Feedback from these tests drove continuous design refinement, ensuring the final product performed reliably and safely in real-world scenarios.
