Client and Project Background

Himalaya FM, China's leading audio platform, aimed to leverage its vast library of children's content to create a groundbreaking educational product. They envisioned not just a speaker, but an intelligent companion for children aged 0-12. LKK Design was tasked with leading the entire Xiaobu AI robot development process, from initial concept to mass production, to bring the Xiaobu AI Robot to life.

The project demanded an integrated approach to overcome key challenges:

  • Create a New Product Category: Develop a "Children's Enlightenment New Species" that was distinctly different from adult smart speakers.

  • Ensure Engaging User Experience: The design must instantly appeal to children, fostering emotional connection through simple, voice-first interaction.

  • Incorporate IP Identity: Effectively translate the "Bub" character from the Tencent comic Ganbu Adventure into a tangible, lovable form.

  • Guarantee Safety and Durability: Meet the highest standards for children's products, using safe materials and robust construction.

  • Achieve Seamless Technical Integration: Harmonize hardware, firmware, and software to deliver a stable and responsive AI experience.

  • Enable Successful Manufacturing: Design for manufacturability to ensure a smooth transition to high-quality, cost-effective mass production.

Solution and Design Process

 Our solution was a comprehensive, full-cycle Xiaobu AI robot development process.

 Design Research & Strategy
We began by immersing ourselves in the world of children. Our research revealed that for kids, a "playful friend" is far more engaging than a "tech gadget." This insight guided our strategy to personify the IP, ensuring Xiaobu would be a character, not just a device.

 Industrial Design (ID)
We created an emotional and safe design:

  • Emotional Form: We faithfully recreated the IP's iconic features: a soft, round face, large friendly eyes, and a signature blue aviator hat. The form was optimized for a huggable and appealing feel.

  • User-Friendly Interaction: Key buttons were integrated into the "hat," and a responsive LED light ring was added to provide visual feedback, making the robot feel alive.

Mechanical Structure Design (MD)
The ID was engineered for real-world use:

  • Durable Structure: A robust internal skeleton was designed to withstand drops and impacts.

  • Child-Safe Materials: We selected food-grade silicone for the skin and high-strength ABS plastic for the shell, ensuring safety for chewing and rough play. The design achieved all necessary safety certifications (3C, ROSH).

 Electronic Design & Development
This phase was critical in the Xiaobu AI robot development, covering the core technical implementation:

  • Hardware Design: Our team developed the custom PCB, integrating a powerful processor, a multi-microphone array for far-field voice pickup, a high-quality speaker, and a 2000mAh battery for portability.

  • Firmware Development: We wrote the low-level code to manage the hardware efficiently, ensuring reliable wake-word detection, audio processing, power management, and seamless communication with the cloud.

  • Software & AI Integration: LKK facilitated the integration of third-party AI services (Rokid's voice wake-up, Turing's NLP) and Himalaya's own content ecosystem into a unified and stable software platform.

Prototyping and Testing
We built and iterated extensively throughout the Xiaobu AI robot development cycle:

  • Appearance Model: 3D printed and hand-painted prototypes were used to perfect the form, color, and feel.

  • Engineering Validation Test (EVT) Prototypes: Functional prototypes were built to test the electronics, firmware, and structural integrity, including drop tests and stress tests.

  • User Acceptance Testing: Children interacted with prototypes to validate the voice commands, sound quality, and overall appeal.

Manufacturing Engineering
We ensured the design could be successfully scaled for production:

  • Mold Design & Tooling: Our manufacturing engineers designed and optimized the complex injection molds for the silicone and ABS parts, ensuring high-quality surface finish and consistent fit.

  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): We refined parts to simplify assembly, reduce component count, and control cost without compromising quality.

Mass Production
The final stage of the Xiaobu AI robot development process was a seamless ramp-up to volume manufacturing. We managed the production line setup and established rigorous quality control checkpoints. This ensured every Xiaobu AI Robot unit met the strict design, performance, and safety standards before reaching children and families.

The Xiaobu AI Robot was a resounding market success, raising over ¥500,000 within days on JD.com's crowdfunding platform. For Himalaya, it established a strong foothold in the children's smart hardware market. For end-users, it successfully transitioned from a simple device to a beloved companion for millions of children, perfectly fulfilling its mission of education and emotional companionship through play. This project stands as a testament to LKK Design's unique capability to orchestrate the entire product development journey, delivering a cohesive and successful product from a mere idea.
