An AI humanoid robot designed and developed for LEJU
Leju possessed strong core technology in companion and educational robots, with prototypes capable of speech communication and full-body joint movement imitation. Their challenge was developing a distinctive visual identity that could also accommodate the complex mechanical requirements and freedom of movement of numerous joints. LKK Design was engaged to create the first-generation humanoid AI robot, balancing form and function for mass production.
Create a high-recognition product identity that balanced a high-tech feel with approachability.
Ensure the exterior design seamlessly integrated with the intricate internal joint mechanisms without restricting movement.
Enhance the user experience through intuitive design, supporting both verbal and physical interaction.
Develop a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing product suitable for the consumer market.
Design Research
Our team began with an in-depth analysis of user scenarios and competitor products. We defined core design pillars of "Technology, Interactivity, and Robustness." Crucially, we conducted a comprehensive study of each joint's range of motion and potential interference zones. This research scientifically informed the shell design, establishing precise boundaries for the housing that would not impede movement.
Industrial Design (ID)
Color & Light: We employed a simple white as the dominant color, contrasted with black accents to create a clean, professional look. Strategic blue lighting embellishments highlighted its advanced, technological character.
Form & Lines: The overall form features robust and flowing lines, conveying a sense of reliability and advanced capability. Strategic surface segmentation and detailing merged aesthetic appeal with structural integrity.
Human-Robot Interaction (HRI): The exterior design was tailored to complement voice interaction and motion feedback, making the robot's functions intuitive and user-friendly.
Mechanical Structure Design
Our team performed detailed kinematic analysis and simulation for all body joints. This ensured maximum mobility without interference. The shell was meticulously designed to wrap around these movement trajectories, protecting internal mechanics while contributing to a dynamic and cohesive aesthetic—achieving a perfect harmony of "form following motion."
Prototyping & Testing
Through rapid prototyping and multiple iterative testing rounds, we validated the integration of the ID and mechanical design. We refined details such as surface curvature, parting lines, and LED placement on physical models. This process guaranteed manufacturability and optimized the user's overall tactile, visual, and interactive experience.
The first-generation humanoid AI robot, designed and engineered by LKK Design, quickly became an industry standout. After its launch, it was featured prominently at major tech exhibitions. The product raised over $140,000 in just two days on a crowdfunding platform and secured $1.4 Million in angel round financing. This success significantly advanced the intelligence and market readiness of companion and educational robots, establishing a new benchmark for Leju.
