Client and Project Background

Client and Project Background

Our client, Firefly Space, is a pioneering Mixed Reality (MR) hardware company founded in Silicon Valley. With a team hailing from UC Berkeley, Cisco, and Deloitte, they are dedicated to developing independent MR headsets with expansive fields of view and multi-user interaction to enhance industrial efficiency.

Firefly Space faced a significant design challenge: their advanced internal optical components resulted in a bulky and cumbersome prototype. They engaged LKK Design to reimagine the product, aiming to transform it into a sleek, professional, and user-friendly device without compromising its technical performance.

Requirements & Objectives

Requirements & Objectives

The primary objective for this Firefly MR design project was to create a headset that felt as advanced as its technology. Key goals included:

  • Visual Refinement: Reduce the perceived volume and create a lightweight, premium aesthetic.

  • Ergonomic Optimization: Ensure all-day comfort for industrial users and intuitive, reliable interactions.

  • Functional Integrity: Accommodate complex internal hardware, including a large FOV optical module and active cooling system.

  • Brand Elevation: Through design, communicate the product's position as a cutting-edge, industrial-grade tool.

Solution & Process

Solution & Process

LKK Design employed a comprehensive, user-centric design process to bring the Firefly H headset to life.

1. Design Research
Our team began by analyzing the industrial MR landscape and user workflows. We identified that users required a comfortable device for extended wear and clear, tactile controls for use in demanding environments. This research directly informed our strategy focused on "visual lightness" and "human-centered interaction."

2. Industrial Design
The Firefly MR design introduces a sophisticated two-tone color scheme. The sides of the visor feature a light metallic finish, while the main body uses a matte black treatment, creating a visual contrast that effectively breaks up the mass. Inspired by sports car aesthetics, we incorporated flowing contour lines and subtle curved surfaces throughout the body, eliminating flat planes to achieve a dynamic and visually engaging form.

3. Mechanical Structural Design
The structural design focused on precision and usability:

  • Touchpad: An intuitively recessed touchpad with clear contours for easy finger navigation.

  • Buttons: Tactile, physical buttons provide definitive haptic feedback, enabling reliable blind operation.

  • Headstrap: A hybrid design combining a soft textile inner layer with a structural plastic frame offers superior comfort and skin contact, improving stability during long sessions.

4. Prototyping and Testing
High-fidelity prototypes were built and subjected to multiple rounds of rigorous testing. We evaluated factors like weight distribution, touchpad responsiveness, button actuation force, and thermal management. The feedback led to iterative refinements in surface curvature and mechanical components.

5. Manufacturing Engineering
Collaborating closely with manufacturing partners, we selected processes like precision injection molding and specialized metal paint finishes to achieve the desired aesthetic. Mold design was optimized for part accuracy, durability, and cost-effective mass production.

6. Mass Production
The Firefly H entered mass production with strict quality controls, ensuring every unit reflected the design intent. It successfully launched to market, receiving positive feedback for its refined form factor.

Delivered Value

Delivered Value

The LKK Firefly MR design successfully translated advanced technology into a desirable and functional product.

  • Enhanced User Experience: The ergonomic design and intuitive controls significantly improved comfort and usability for industrial applications.

  • Strong Market Reception: Launched at AWE Asia 2022 and featured at the China International Import Expo, the Firefly H was recognized as the world's first large-FOV, full-color binocular MR headset, garnering significant media attention.

  • Business Value: The headset supports various software solutions, including remote collaboration and no-code editors, enabling true AR/MR application落地 (landing/implementation) in training, sales, and education, delivering tangible ROI through improved efficiency.

Through this holistic Firefly MR design approach, LKK Design helped Firefly Space deliver a market-leading product that sets a new standard for what an industrial Mixed Reality headset can be.
