Smart Ecological Aquarium: Designed for Nature, Engineered for Simplicity

In today’s fast-paced world, people increasingly seek warmth, life, and a connection to nature in their living and working spaces. The home aquatics industry has grown rapidly in response to this need. However, traditional fish tanks often require frequent water changes and messy filter cleaning – a major inconvenience for users.

To solve this problem, LKK Design partnered with a client to create a truly low-maintenance ecological aquarium – one that stays clean and healthy for six months without water changes or filter cleaning.

As lifestyles evolve, so does the desire for more vivid, comforting indoor environments. The aquarium industry has emerged as a direct response to this emotional and aesthetic demand. But most fish tanks on the market still rely on weekly water changes and regular filter maintenance – time-consuming tasks that also risk stressing or injuring fish.

Our client wanted to change that. The goal was to design and develop an ecological fish tank that eliminates the need for constant maintenance while keeping water clean, fish healthy, and plants thriving. LKK Design took on this full-turnkey project, guiding the product from initial concept to mass production.

Innovative Solution

Innovative Solution

The result is a beautifully crafted circular glass aquarium that offers a full 360° viewing angle with a natural magnifying effect. Unlike conventional tanks, this model integrates the filtration system seamlessly into the body – creating a sleek, modern look while delivering exceptional functionality.

Key features include:

 • Integrated heating system

 • Waterproof design with low-voltage safety

 • 360° electrical coupling

 • Oxygen supply and uniform lighting

 • Automatic filtration

 • Ultra-low noise operation

 • Dual-use for fish and hydroponic plants

This smart aquarium combines aesthetics with advanced engineering, making it possible for anyone to enjoy a thriving aquatic ecosystem with minimal effort.

Product Design & Development Process

Product Design & Development Process

1 Design Research

We began with in-depth user research to identify pain points around traditional fish tanks. Through competitive analysis, user interviews, and environmental simulation, we defined core requirements: low maintenance, safety, and visual appeal.

2 Industrial Design

Our designers broke away from conventional tank shapes. The circular glass body enhances transparency and viewing pleasure. The filtration and electronic systems are fully integrated, preserving a clean exterior. Multiple color and material options were evaluated to match modern home decor.

3 Mechanical Engineering

To meet the client’s strict functional requirements, our mechanical engineers conducted four rounds of prototyping and countless structural adjustments. The filtration, conductive, aeration, and heating systems all used a “material reduction with rib reinforcement” strategy – balancing mechanical strength with cost efficiency.

Critical dimensions – such as the height of the hydroponic planting area above the water surface – were optimized through repeated testing to ensure a natural user experience.

4 Electronics Design

Hardware Design

Following the principles of low power consumption, high safety, and strong waterproofing, we developed a highly integrated control board and sensor system:

 • Industrial-grade low-power MCU supporting PWM and ADC

 • Temperature, water level, and optional water quality sensors

 • Low-voltage power supply (<24V) with sealed waterproof connectors

 • Custom 360° magnetic/contact electrical coupling for easy tank placement

 • IPX4-rated waterproofing for all exposed PCBs and interfaces

Firmware Development

The firmware handles real-time data acquisition, logic control, and communication:

 • PID heating control, dimmable lighting, and intermittent pump operation

 • Built-in protection: dry-run cutoff, over-temperature shutdown, sensor fault detection

 • Low-power sleep mode with interrupt wake-up

 • OTA update capability for future feature enhancements

Software Development (Mobile App)

We also developed a companion mobile app for iOS and Android:

 • One-touch Wi-Fi/Bluetooth pairing

 • Real-time display of water temperature, light status, and pump mode

 • Remote control of lighting, oxygen pump, and heating

 • Smart auto mode simulating natural day/night cycles

 • Maintenance reminders (water change, filter cleaning, plant watering)

 • Multi-device management for multiple tanks

Together, hardware, firmware, and software transform a traditional fish tank into a truly IoT-enabled smart aquarium.

5 Prototyping & Testing

Multiple functional prototypes were built to validate filtration efficiency, thermal stability, low-voltage safety, noise levels, and plant-fish coexistence. After four iterations, all performance indicators met or exceeded client expectations.

6 Manufacturing Engineering & Mold Development

We conducted Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) analysis to optimize wall thickness, draft angles, and parting lines. High-precision CNC machining and mirror EDM were used for mold making. Three rounds of mold trials (T1, T2, T3) ensured stable production.

7 Compliance Certification & Quality Management

To enable global market access, we helped the client obtain:

 • CE

 • RoHS

 • FCC

 • IP waterproof rating report

 • Low Voltage Directive (LVD) certification

A full quality control system was implemented: IQC (incoming), IPQC (in-process), and OQC (outgoing).

8 Mass Production & Supply Chain Management

We connected the client with reliable suppliers for injection molding, electronics assembly, and glass processing. After pilot run validation, we moved to full mass production, providing BOM lists, SOPs, and on-site engineering support for the first three production batches.

9 Logistics & Delivery Services

To support global sales, we offer end-to-end logistics:

 • Sea freight with customs clearance and insurance

 • Destination customs brokerage

 • Warehousing and distribution via overseas hubs

 • Door-to-door delivery from port to end customer

Whether B2B bulk orders or B2C single-unit shipments, we provide flexible, trackable logistics solutions.

Delivered Value

Delivered Value

This project represents a zero-to-one breakthrough for our client. LKK Design not only met but exceeded the original vision, delivering a product that received widespread acclaim from both the client and industry professionals.

We helped secure multiple patents and successfully achieved stable heating in a compact aquarium – enabling users to keep tropical fish and plants even in cold winter months.

Since launch, the low-maintenance, high-aesthetics, and smart features of this aquarium have generated strong market feedback, making it a standout product in the smart home category.
